We reviewed 12 eyes of 12 patients who developed endophthalmitis following intraocular surgery. The preceding procedures were cataract surgery 7 eyes, secondary intraocular lens implantation with sulcus fixation 1 eye and glaucoma surgery 4 eyes. Corneal incision had been performed in 3 eyes, including along the temporal limbus in 2 eyes. Vitrectomy was performed for endophthalmitis in 11 eyes with additional intravitreal injection of antibiotics in 3 eyes. Culture from the aqueous or the vitreous was positive in 7 eyes. Streptococcal species in 4 eyes including a type in 3, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in 2 eyes and Enterococcus faecalis in 1 eye. Eyes infected by Streptococcal species resulted in poor visual outcome in general.
