We compared scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) perimetry and Program 31 of Octopus perimetry regarding the rate of detection of absolute scotoma in 43 eyes. Absolute scotoma smaller than 1 disc diameter (DD) as detected in 10 eyes by SLO scotometry failed to be detected by Octopus perimetry in 8 eyes. Absolute scotoma of 1.0 DD in size could not be detected by Octopus perimetry in 2 of 4 eyes. Absolute scotoma larger than 1.0 DD was detected by both methods in 16 eyes. There was no instance in which absolute scotoma was detected only by Octopus perimetry. The findings show the value of SLO scotometery in detailed functional assessment of the posterior retina.
