A new method is described with which the retinal sensitivity is measured by projecting the aiming beam of an argon or krypton laser photocoagulator through a 3-mirror contact lens. The projectedaiming beam is far brighter at the retinal level than the light target at maximum intensity in an ordinary perimeter or scotometer. The discrepancy in measured scotoma by laser and ordinary peri-metry or scotometry suggests the probable recov-ering potential of the visual function. This laser examination can be performed even in the presence of slight opacity of the media, where ophthalmo-scopy or perimetry is not possible. Relative scoto-mata can be detected by setting the laser beam at an adequately low intensity. Visual field defects in the extreme nasal periphery, which cannot be tested by conventional perimeter, can also be detected. The present method appears to be of particular value when used during laser photoco-agulation.
