We evaluated the visual functions and subjective complaints before and after cataract surgery by questionnaire containing 13 items devised by us. Unilateral or bilateral cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantaion was performed in 57 patients. The ages ranged from 23 to 94 years, average 69.8 years. The cataract was graded and typed after the Japanese Cooperative Cataract Epidemiology study. Postoperative evaluation was made 4 weeks after surgery. Patients underwent glare test, contrast sensitivity test, documen-tation of lens opacification by an anterior eye segment analysis system and other general examinations. VF-14 test was additionally performed before surgery in 48 patients. As the result, abundant complaints were made even after surgery. These complaints were not limited to those concerning visual acuity. Postoperative visual functions should be discussed again from the standpoint of quality of life of the patients.
