Optical characteristics were measured after folding procedures of soft acrylic intraocular lens. Modulation transfer function (MTF) and resolving power under veiling glare light were measured in an eye cell in water. The lens surface was examined microscopically. After folding the lens for 30 seconds, the MTF recovered in 6 and 4 minutes in 20°C and 37°C respectively. Prolonged folding for 10, 20, 60 minutes did not affect the MTF 30 minutes after unfolding. The resolving power deteriorated after folding for 60 minutes. The optic material was damaged after folding for 20 and 60 minutes. Very forceful folding of the lens for 30 seconds did not induce changes in MTF or resolving power. Tight folding for 5 minutes induced slight deterioration in both parameters with damage to the optic material. Artificial linear cracks at the center of the optic affected the MTF when the cracks exceeded 10 lines per 3 mm in number. Resolving power worsened with 20 or more cracks per 3 mm. When a groove was made at the center of the optic by pressure of forceps, MTF normalized 6 minutes later. The findings show that the optical quality of soft acrylic intraocular lens is rarely affected unless extreme manipulation is applied.
