The large size of the applanation head of the Goldmann applanation tonometer may cause erroneous reading of the intraocular pressure in eyes with a narrow lid fissure. This problem may be eliminated by the use of different instruments with a smaller applanation area. We studied the intraocular pressure in one eye of 87 outpatients with the new Mackay-Marg tonometer (ProTon®) and investigated the parameters for an erroneous measurement of the intraocular pressure.

Parameters such as an age of the patients, corrected visual acuity, and corneal curvature did not correlate positively with the difference between the measurements by Goldmann applanation tonometer and ProTon. One significant factor was the experience of the examiner. When the repetition of an examination exceeded 10 times, the difference between the measurements by Goldmann applanation tonometer and ProTon became non-significant.
