We developed a sensitive method for fundus-controlled flicker perimetry. It allows the light from the test object, background and fixation target to pass through an infrared video fundus camera and to fall onto the retina. It is possible to alter the intensity and modulation of stimulus spots and to measure the temporal modulation sensitivity for a 50-minute flickering field in the central and peripheral retina. In normal subjects, the flicker sensitivity decreased with eccentricity. In patients with suspected optic nerve disorders including ocular hypertension, a significant decrease in temporal modulation sensitivity was observed at the specific frequency at stages before they manifest any abnormarity in computerized automat-ed perimetric field. The temporal modulation perimetry thus enables a highly sensitive measurement of visual losses in clinical situations.
