  • Look Inside

We evaluated 44 patients who presented with transient visual loss, using ophthalmic Doppler sonography and high resolution B-mode echography of the carotid artery. Twenty-nine cases showed abnormal sonograms or plaques in the carotid artery or the ophthalmic artery. Such examinations are useful for evaluationg arterosclerotic lesions in the carotid and ophthalmic arteries. The pathophysiology of these cases is hypoperfusion due to stenosis or occlusion of the artery and transient embolism of free plaque. Treatment for prevention of retinal artery occlusion or cerebral infarction is recommended. Anemia was the likely cause of visual loss in three cases and central retinal vein occlusion the likely cause in one case.
