Optical performance of the cornea was evaluated in 40 eyes by raytracing technique one year after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for myopia with excimer laser. All the eyes showed uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20. Another series 40 normal eyes served as control. Topographic data were calculated to give standard deviations (SD) of focal distribution along the normal to the corneal vertex weighted by the projected area of each surface point. The treated eyes showed significantly greater SDs than normal eyes. The SD was positively correlated with the decentration and the correction power. The findings suggest that the optical performance of the cornea is affected by decentration and the corrective power of PRK.
