　40歳の真性小眼球の男性の両眼に，網膜色素上皮のreticular degenerationをみた。本症例では，網膜毛細血管の拡張を伴う周辺部網膜浮腫が広範にみられ，uveal effusionを伴う真性小眼球の症例と同様，強膜肥厚に由来する網膜下液排除に関わる機能のバランスの崩れが潜在している可能性が考えられた。

　網膜色索上皮のreticular degenerationの成因は不明であるが，真性小眼球では強膜自体の形態学的，組織化学的異常によって水や蛋白質などの高分子物質に対する透過性が低下していると考えられ，uveal　effusionにleopard spotが生じる場合と同様の色素上皮の不規則な菲薄化と集籏が生じreticular pig—mentationを生じたのではないかと考えた。

A 40-year-old male presented with bilateral nanophthalmos and reticular degeneration of retinal pigment epithelium. Both eyes showed peripheral retinal edema with dilated capillaries suggestive of disturbed drainage system in the choroid. While the cause of reticular degeneration could not be identified, it appeared that it developed similar to the leopard spots in uveal effusion in nanophthalmos.
