  • Look Inside

We reviewed 1849 babies who were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit during 10 years and 2 months ending March 1992. There were 1063 babies with birthweight of 2500 g or less. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was detected in 171 cases, 16.1%, of which 32, 3.0%, needed treat-ment. Infants with birthweight of more than 1000 g and gestational period of 29 weeks or more had significantly lower risks of ROP, particularly its severe types. There was a decreasing tendency for ROP needing treatment during the 10-year period. This feature seemed to be due to improved manage-ment, decrease in birthweight of infants with ROP needing treatment, and to lesser number of severe cases needing eye treatment.
