We measured the autofluorescence and trans-mittance of the noncataractous lens in 43 eyes of 25 diabetic patients aged 42 to 68 years, average 55 years. A sumilar study was made in 19 eyes of age -matched 11 healthy individuals. The diabetic patients showed a significantly increased lens auto-fluorescence and reduced transmittance over the controls.

This finding was considered to reflect minute changes in the crystalline lens as precursory to the actual opacity of the diabetic lens. Fluoro-photometric readings in the present study appeared to fairly predict the presence of diabetes mellitus. The autofluorescence of the lens showed no correla-tion with the duration of diabetes mellitus, stage of retinopathy or HbA1c value.
