  • Look Inside

A 25-year-old woman showed signs of precocious delivery at 30 weeks of twin pregnancy. She was treated by peroral ritodrine hydrochloride at the daily dosis of 15 to 20mg. The dosis was increased to 48mg per day intravenously 16 days later. She noticed, the same day, blurring of vision in her right eye. We observed hemorrhages in the vitreous, retina and the choroid in the affected eye. Fluorescein angiography showed the retinal vessels to be intact. The platelet count in the circulating blood was reduced to 14.4×104/mm3. Ritodrine hydrochloride is a known beta2 stimulant and induces tachycardia and increases of cardiac output, carotid blood flow and blood plasma volume. These effects might have contributed to the rupture of retinal and choroidal vessels.
