  • Look Inside

We performed penetrating keratoplasty in 34 eyes during 1991. Three eyes required another keratoplasty. All the donor corneas were supplied by an American eye bank. We investigated the microbial contamination of storage medium of the donor cornea, postoperative infection and rejection. One of 28 storage media, 3.6%, was culture-posi-tive, but no infection developed after keratoplasty using this cornea. There was one postoperative infection, 2.8%, caused by Candida albicans. The storage medium of this cornea was culture-nega-tive. There was thus no patient who developed ocular infection related to medium contamination. The incidence of graft rejection was 19.4%, which did not seem to be high regarding the high risks involved in the present series. The findings show that keratoplasty using donor cornea supplied by the American eye bank is safe in regard to infection and graft rejection.
