  • Look Inside

We quantitated the concentration in the tear fluid after a single peroral administration of 200 mg sparfloxacin in 7 healthy adults. The peak concen-tration averaged 0.623 ± 0.027 μg/ml. The tear fluid level was positively correlated with that in the serum with an average tear/serum fraction of 68.6 %. The tear fluid concentration averaged 0.418±0.039 μg/ml at 12 hours and 0.280±0.060 μg/ ml at 24 hours. These values were well above theMIC80 one of 0.1 μg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis.

We administered sparfloxacin at the dosis of 100 mg twice daily to 16 patients with external infec-tions including hordeolum 5 cases, meibominitis 10 cases and keratitis 1 case. The clinical response was excellent in 5 cases and good in 11. Side effects were mild and disappeared soon after withdrawal of the drug.
