We evaluated the effect of eye surgery under local anesthesia on the systemic circulation and ventilation in 100 hospitalized patients. Their ages averaged 68.6 yeas. Electrocardiogram was monitored from 2 hours before start of intramus-cular premedication until 2 hours after end of sur-gery. The level of arterial oxygen saturation was measured in the surgical room. All the cases received intramuscular hydroxyzine chlorate and atropine 30 minutes before surgery.

The heart rate increased after premedication and injection of local anesthetics and returned to the initial level after surgery. Ventricular ectopies tended to decrease after premedication. Supra-ventricular ectopies tended to decrease after sur-gery. Both these arrythmias showed wide individ-ual variations. The arterial oxygen saturation fell below 90% during surgery in 16 of the 100 cases in the series. Monitoring of arterial oxygen level appeared to be potentially critical during eye sur-gery under local anesthesia.
