We quantitated the cells and protein concentra-tion in the anterior chamber after cataract surgerywith or without intraocular lens (IOL) implanta-tion. A laser flare-cell meter was used in the evalu-ation. We performed extracapsular cataractextraction (ECCE) with IOL implantation in 48eyes. ECCE alone was performed in 10 eyes. Thefellow eyes of unilaterally operated 24 cases servedas control. The aqueous protein concentration inthe ECCE+IOL group was higher than in the ECCEgroup during the 1st and 2nd postoperative week (p<0.01 and p<0.05 respectively), and it washigher than in the control for 6 months after sur-gery (p<0.05). The ECCE group showed higherprotein concentration than the control for 1 monthafter surgery (p<0.05). The cells in the anteriorchamber were more numerous in the ECCE+IOLgroup than ECCE group on the 1st postoperativeday only (p< 0.05). In both groups, the cells weremore numerous than in controls for 1 to 2 weeksafter surgery (p<0.01). There was no difference inpostoperative inflammation dependent on the typeof IOL : conventional, bifocal, heparin-coat, UV-absording PMMAs. Patients in 8th decade of ageshowed higher protein in the aqueous than those inthe 6th decade. There was no difference amongother age groups.
