Abstract Purpose:To review seventeen cases of optic neuritis at our hospital.

Cases:The series comprised patients(20 eyes)diagnosed with optic neuritis between 2012 and 2021(19 years). Their clinical records were reviewed.

Results:The average age of the patients was 53.1 years(range, 14 to 77 years). Of the 17 patients, 9 were males(10 eyes)and 8 were females(10 eyes). In 8 patients(8 eyes), the cause could not be identified. One patient(one eye)was positive for myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein(MOG)antibody, two patients(3 eyes)were positive for AQP 4 antibody, one patient(one eye)caused by anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody, one patient(one eye)had hypertension of pregnancy, one patient(one eye)had IgG4 syndrome, one patient(two eyes)had diabetic neuritis, one patient(one eye)had chronic inflammatory multiple demyelinating polyneuritis and one patient(two eyes)had Harada disease. The duration of treatment ranged from 1 to 60 days(mean, 10.4 days). Patients received one to three cycles of steroid therapy. The patient with chronic inflammatory multiple demyelinating polyneuritis received intravenous immunoglobulin after 2 cycles of steroid pulse therapy. Fifteen patient(18 eyes)showed visual improvement, and two patient(two eyes)showed no changeable.

Conclusion:Although steroid pulse therapy is effective for optic neuritis, intravenous immunoglobulin could be an efficacious therapeutic option for steroid-resistant optic neuritis.
