Abstract. Purpose:To report and compare the outcome of vitreous surgery and scleral buckling as the primary procedure for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Objects and Method:This retrospective study was performed on 55 eyes of 55 cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who received surgery at the Yonezawa City Hospital during 5 years through 2013. Vitreous surgery was performed on 35 eyes and scleral buckling on 20 eyes. Results:The retina became reattached after the initial procedure in 27 eyes(77%)after vitreous surgery and in 17 eyes(85%)after scleral buckling. All the eyes showed reattachment after multiple procedures. Eyes that received vitreous surgery included total retinal detachment, giant tear, multiple tears, or proliferative vitreoretinopathy with grade B or greater. Eyes that received scleral buckling included small tear and retinal detachment involving less than one quadrant. Conclusion:Proper selection of surgical procedure is essential to achieve higher rate of success in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
