Abstract Purpose:To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the number of patients and surgeries in Tenri Hospital.

Subjects and methods:Using the patient and surgery management system at our Hospital, we examined the dynamics of the number of outpatients, ophthalmology inpatients, number of surgeries, and surgical procedures in all departments at the hospital using data from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2022.

Result:The Department of Ophthalmology showed a consistent decrease in the number of outpatients, and similar trends were observed in the departments of major surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology, and plastic surgery. The number of outpatients, inpatients, and first-time outpatients decreased. The number of vitreous surgeries showed a slight downward trend, but the number of surgeries on the preretinal membrane showed a relatively significant decrease. The number of glaucoma surgeries remained flat or slightly increased, while the number of filtration surgeries decreased and that of outflow tract reconstruction surgeries increased. The number of vitreous injections tended to increase, and the number of cases of diabetic macular edema and retinal vein occlusion increased markedly.

Conclusions:The number of ophthalmologic outpatients decreased under COVID-19 infection and may have shown a similar trend in major surgery. Preretinal surgery may be a wait-and-see option in an epidemic. Outflow tract reconstruction may be more likely to be selected for glaucoma surgery in an epidemic. The number of vitreous injections has been increasing even during an epidemic, and may continue to do so in the future.
