Abstract Purpose:We investigated the role of preoperative blood tests for blepharoptosis at our hospital.

Subjects and Method:This study included 947 patients who presented with blepharoptosis who underwent blood tests, including acetylcholine receptor antibody and thyroid function tests(thyroid-stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine, and free thyroxine estimation)between January 1, 2008 and February 18, 2022.

Results:The acetylcholine receptor antibody test result was positive in 38 patients, of which 18 patients recovered from blepharoptosis after only medical therapy for myasthenia gravis. One patient was diagnosed with thymoma and showed improvement in blepharoptosis post-thymectomy. Thyroid hormone abnormalities were detected in 81 patients. Blepharoptosis resolved in one patient following treatment of the primary disease alone. This patient was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and received thyroid hormone therapy.

Conclusion:Preoperative blood tests enabled accurate detection of thyroid disease or myasthenia gravis and eliminated the need for unnecessary operations. In our opinion, preoperative blood tests are useful for the management of blepharoptosis.
