Abstract Purpose:To clarify the efficacy of lifestyle guidance by Clouclip® for myopia prevention in children during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Methods:The participants were myopic children under 15 years old, who visited our clinic between December 2019 and June 2020. We divided patients into the following three groups;before, during, and after lockdown. Myopia progression/month was retrospectively compared with and without Clouclip® guidance between the three groups. Moreover, changes in environmental factors related to myopia in patients with Clouclip® guidance were compared across the groups.

Results:In the absence of the Clouclip® guidance(−), myopia progressed significantly during lockdown(before, during, and after lockdown:−0.04±0.16D, −0.18±0.24D, and −0.02±0.14D, respectively;p=0.025). Meanwhile, no statistical difference was observed when guidance was present(−0.08±0.20D, −0.06±0.12D, and −0.05±0.18D, respectively;p=0.64)). Even with guidance, near-work activity increased during the lockdown;however, the time and frequency of outdoor activities were enabled to increase. After lockdown, near-work activity return to the same level as before lockdown, but the time and frequency of outdoor activities were significantly decreased(p<0.05).

Conclusion:COVID-19 lockdown negatively affected myopia progression in school-aged children. However, quantitative lifestyle guidance by Clouclip® effectively prevented myopia exacerbation during the lockdown.
