Abstract Purpose:Patients with intermittent exotropia are known to have good binocular function, and the surgical intervention is performed for cosmetic reasons. In this study, we investigated the utilities of a low-power prism, which are embedded in ordinary spectacles.

Methods:Patients with intermittent exotropia with ≧25Δ in alternate prism cover test(APCT)and ≧5 in Newcastle Control Score(NCS)were included. A total of 25 patients aged 2-13 years who could be followed for 3 months were included in the analyses. After informed consent was obtained, prism spectacles up to 16Δ embedded in the spectacles(with correction for refraction errors, if necessary)was used. Ocular alignments measured in APCT, near stereoacuity, and NCS were measured at baseline and 3 months after the prescription of spectacles.

Results:Compared to the baseline, ocular alignments, near stereoacuity, and NCS were all improved after 3 months with prism spectacle usage(p<0.01)

Conclusion:According to the results of this study, low power-added prism embedded in ordinary spectacles may be a good alternative intervention of surgery.
