Abstract Purpose:To the outcome of ophthalmological screening before start of systemic treatment with hydroxychloroquine(HCQ)for systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE).

Cases and Method:This study was made on 210 SLE patients seen at the Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Medical Center during 86 months through March 2017. The series comprised 16 males and 194 females. Electronic medical records were retrospectively evaluated regarding age, sex, body weight and height, intended HCQ dosage, adjuvant therapy, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus findings, slit-lamp microscopic findings, optical coherence tomographic findings, visual field and color vision test findings.

Results:Out of 210 cases, HCQ treatment was started in 197 cases(93.8%)and not in 13 cases(6.2%). Out of these 13 cases, HCQ was withheld in 5 cases due to ophthalmologically abnormal findings and in 8 cases due to systemic causes including pregnancy. SLE retinopathy was present in 3 cases and received systemic HCQ.

Conclusion:Systemic treatment with HCQ was initiated in 93.8% of cases of SLE after ophthalmological screening.
