Abstract Purpose:To report the outcome of Acanthamoeba keratitis in the past ten years treated at Fukuoka University Hospital.

Cases:The present series comprised 22 cases, including 10 males and 12 females. All were unilaterally affected. We evaluated the backgrounds, clinical findings, treatment measures, and visual outcome.

Findings and Clinical Course:All were contact lens wearers. Soft contact lens was used by 21 cases and hard contact lens by one. Acanthamoeba was isolated in 11 cases. The other 11 cases were diagnosed from clinical findings. All cases were treated by combination of local and systemic antifungal drugs, disinfectant eyed drops(0.02% chlorhexidine gluconate), and corneal scraping. Pentamidine isethionate infusion was used in 21 cases. Five cases(23%)failed to respond to conservative treatments and were treated by deep lamellar keratoplasty using big bubble method. These five cases showed no intraoperative or postoperative complications. Hospital stay averaged 25 days in the whole series. No case showed recurrence of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Conclusion:The present topical and systemic medication was generally effective for Acanthamoeba keratitis. Deep lamellar keratoplasty was useful in treatment-resistant cases.
