Abstract Purpose:To present a 10-year review of open eyeglobe injury at Shizuoka Hospital, Juntendo Unliversity.

Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 94 eyes of 94 patients treated by us from 2007 to 2017. The series comprised 61 males and 33 females. The age ranged from 3 to 98 years, average 54.9 years.

Findings:There were 52 eyes(55.3%)of eyeglobe rupture and 42 eyes(44.7%)of eyeglobe laceration. Eyeglobe lacertion included 28 eyes(29.8%)of penetrating injury and 14 eyes(14.9%)of intraocular foreign body. There was no case of double perforation. Visual outcome was poor in eyeglobe rupture and good in eyeglobe laceration. Visual acuity resulted in no light perception in 14 cases of eyeglobe rupture. After vitreous surgery for eyeglobe rupture, vision improved from light perception in 11 out of 14 eyes(78.6%), and from no light perception in 3 out of 5 eyes(60.0%). In eyeglobe rupture, advanced age and presence of retinal detachment were major risk factors for poor outcome.

Conclusion:Early vitreous surgery is advocated even if poor visual outcome is expected by routine treatments.
