Abstract Purpose:To report a case who developed anaphylactic shock due to latex allergy during eye surgery under general anesthesia.

Case:A 5-year-old boy was diagnosed with congenital horizontal nystagmus. Surgery was scheduled under general anesthesia.

Clinical Course:There was no problem before introduction of general anesthesia. Ten minutes after start of surgery, the arterial blood showed sudden decrease in oxygen saturation, followed by decreased blood pressure and hyperemia of abdominal skin. The patient appeared to be in anaphylactic shock. After treatment with intravenous corticosteroid, adrenalin, and antihistamine, surgery was resumed and completed. After surgery, the patient was examined by intracutaneous test, prick test, and specific IgE antibody to identify the cause of anaphylactic shock. These tests showed that the anaphylactic shock was due to latex rubber glove worn by the anesthesiologist.

Conclusion:Latex rubber used in general anesthesia appeared to be the cause of anaphylactic shock.
