Abstract Purpose:To report changes in the shape of lens capsule during phacoemulsification in pig eyes.

Method:Ten pig eyes were used in this experiment. After removal of the iris, partial zonular dehiscence was made using diathermy. The lens cortex was aspirated around the equator along the zonular dehiscence. The zonular dehiscence ranged from 68.1 to 117.7 degrees and averaged 87.9 degrees.

Results:Area of exposed anterior lens capsule was 7.2% when the dehiscence was less than 90 degrees. It was 12.8% when the dehiscence was more than 90 degrees. The difference was significant(p<0.0001).

Conclusion:The present experimental model promises to enable quantification of changes in the shape of lens capsule during phacoemulsification in human eyes. It may also contribute to the design of capsular holder during surgery.
