Abstract Purpose: To report our latest technique of phacoemulsification and aspiration without hydrodissection.

Method: Changes of anterior lens surface in a pig eye was observed by Miyake-Apple view following aspiration of the anterior capsule. A similar observation was made in a human eye with cataract following removal of lens fiber cell layer.

Findings: During suctioning of the anterior cortical surface in a porcine eye, the lens content in the lower hemisphere was separated from the lens capsule generating an empty space. This procedure was defined as lower separation after removal of lens fiber cell layer. An upper separation was possible following lower separation and dividing the nucleus into two halves of human cataract eye.

Conclusion: Removal of lens fiber cell layer, or separation of the cortex and nucleus from the lens capsule, consisted of lower and upper separation. This procedure could be conducted either separately or in combination with hydrodissection of the lens nucleus.
