Abstract. Purpose:To report 6-month outcome of intravitreal injection of pegaptanib sodium for exudative age-related macular degeneration(AMD)with good visual acuity. Cases and Method:This study was made on 7 eyes of 7 patients with AMD. The age ranged from 63 to 84 years and averaged 77 years. Their corrected visual acuity was 0.5 or over. Each eye received intravitreal injection of 0.3 mg pegaptanib sodium. They were followed up for 6 months or longer. Results:Treatment was repeated 2 to 5 times, average 3.7 times. Visual acuity after 6 months remained stable or better in all the eyes. The difference from the pretreatment level was not significant(p=0.22). Central retinal thickness,as measured by optical coherence tomography(OCT),decreased or remained unchanged in 4 eyes and increased in 3 eyes. The difference from the pretreatment level was not significant(p=0.88). There was no ocular or systemic complication throughout the study. Conclusion:Intravitreal injection of pegaptanib may result in maintaining visual function in eyes with AMD with initially good visual acuity.
