Abstract. Background:Cytomegalovirus(CMV)retinitis is reported to develop in severely immunosuppressed individuals. Purpose:To report CMV retinitis in an apparently immunocompetent person. Case:A 58-year-old woman presented with seeing floaters and eye discharge as the chief complaints. She had been receiving phototherapy for sarcoidosis of the skin. Findings and Clinical Course:Best corrected visual acuity was 1.0 in either eye. The left eye showed mild floaters in the aqueous, and retinal periphlebitis in the periphery. Routine laboratory study showed normal findings in the blood. The left fundus lesion progressed after topical steroid. She showed elevated titer for SMV in the blood. Systemic valganciclovir was followed by improved fundus lesions. The left eye developed multiple retinal tear 6 months after her initial visit. The vitreous sample obtained during surgery was positive for CMV-DNA. Conclusion:The present case illustrates that CMV retinitis may develop in an apparently immunocompetent individual.
