Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of transplantation of cultivated autologous conjunctival epithelial cells in patients with bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency. Cases and Method:This review was made on 4 eyes of 3 patients with bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency. They were aged 37, 69 and 48 years respectively. They had corneal opacity with chromosome defects, corneal opacity due to congenital syphilis with past history of keratoplasty, and idiopathic corneal erosion with past history of keratoplasty respectively. Four eyes were transplanted with cultivated autologous conjunctival epithelial cells. Conjunctival epithelial cells were cultured with fetal bovine serum and 3T3 fibroblasts as feeder cells in 2 eyes, and under conditions free of serum or feeder cells in the other 2 eyes. Results:Corrected visual acuity improved from 0.02 to 0.7, from 0.02 to 0.3 and later to 0.07, from counting fingers at 20 cm to 0.05, and from 0.01 to 0.9 respectively. Conclusion:Visual acuity improved in 3 out of 4 eyes after transplantation of cultivated autologous conjunctival epithelial cells in patients with bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency. Improvement over longer period remains as a major problem.
