Abstract. Purpose:To report patients' satisfaction after cataract surgery in eyes with age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Objects and Method:This study was made on 45 eyes of 45 patients who received cataract surgery by us in the past 2 years. All had AMD in the operated eye. The series comprised 27 males and 18 females. The age ranged from 70 to 91 years, average 80 years. Patients were asked by questionnaire 4 months or more after surgery regarding motives for surgery, expectation prior to surgery, and subjective satisfaction after surgery. Results:The questionnaire was responded by 38 patients(84%). Cataract surgery was decided by themselves in 18 patients and after advice by doctors or nurses in 19. Prior to surgery, improvement in visual acuity was expected in 35 patients and not in 3. Outcome of surgery was satisfactory in 29 patients, was inconclusive in 4, and failed to meet the expectation in 5. When evaluated as logMAR, there was no significant difference between visual acuity or AMD before and after surgery. Conclusion:Explanation prior to surgery was a major factor for patients' satisfaction.
