  • Look Inside

We performed a double-masked crossover test to evaluate the effect of 0.5% betaxolol, 0.5% timolol and placebo as ophthalmic solutions on the blood pressure and pulse rate after exercise in 12 healthy volunteers. We carried out the study for 3 consecu-tive periods with washout period in-between. Sub-jects were instilled with either of the three ophthal-mic solutions in the randomly assigned order. When treated with 0.5% betaxolol, cardiovascular responses to exercise were statistically the same as with placebo. When treated with 0.5% timolol, a significant reduction in pulse rate resulted when compared with placebo responses. A significant reduction in intraocular pressure resulted after instillation of betaxolol or timolol. The amount of reduction was greater after timolol than betaxolol. The findings indicate that the 0.5% betaxolol ophthalmic solution has a lower potential for car-diovascular side effects than 0.5% timolol.
