  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We followed up 211 diabetic patients, 422 eyes, over periods of 2 years or more. We evaluated the value of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1) and fast-ing blood glucose level (FBG) 10 times or more a year. We then evaluated the course of diabetic retinopathy during the period as correlated against the duration of diabetes, age of onset, age of first visit to ophthalmologist, sex, therapeutic modality of diabetic control, HbA1 and FBG. Cox's regres-sion method was employed in the analysis.

The progression of diabetic retinopathy was sig-nificantly correlated with HbA1 (p<0.05). Particu-larly, cumulative effect of raised HbA1 level during the foregoing 7 months resulted in aggravation of diabetic retinopathy. The FBG value was not cor-related with the fate of retinopathy.
