  • Abstract

We evaluated the role of ointment in the eye as a modifying factor in read-out value by flare-cell meter (Kowa Co.). Fifteen eyes after planned extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation served as basis for the study. We counted aqueous protein concentration and cell count before and after instil-lation of 0.5%indomethacin eye ointment. The values for aqueous protein concentration ranged from 17.7 to 204.2 photon counts per msec. The values for cell count ranged from 12.4 to 90.9 per 0. 075 mm3. Significant correlation was present in the values before and after intillation: r=0.91 for aqueous protein, r=0.97 for cell count. Eye oint-ments, or oil-prepared eye drops, exerted thus little interference on the measured values by flare-cell meter.
