  • Look Inside

We treated a consecutive series of 11 eyes with retinal detachment due to macular hole by vitrectomy during the past 47 months. All the eyes were myopic. One eye manifested obvious vitreous traction to the macular hole. The other 10 eyes manifested proliferative vitreoretinopathy secon-dary to retinal detachment.

We performed, as standard procedure, vitrectomy, scleral encircling and intravitreal tamponade with SF6 gas. Intentional retinal tear was created to aspirate the subretinal fluid. Addi-tional macular buckling was performed in one eye. Laser photocoagulation was applied to the macula in one eye.

Postoperative retinal reattachment resulted in all the eyes. Retinal redetachment developed in 2 eyes, 3 and 8 months later respectively. One eye was cured by additional gas tamponade and the other by macular buckling procedure.

Our procedure was thought to be the modality of choice for retinal detachment with macular hole complicated by proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
