Above findings indicate that intravitreal silicone oil ought to be removed early after surgery, prefer-ably at 2 to 3 months postoperatively and before complications become manifest.

cone oil injection during a 5-year period ending February 1986. In 78 eyes in the series, the silicone oil remained in the vitreous for 3 months or more for various reasons. Later complications necessitat-ed removal of silicone oil in all the 78 eyes.

Major late complications included keratopathy, glau-coma, migration of emulsified silicone oil particles in the anterior chamber, cataract and reprolifera-tions of epiretinal membrane.
