  • Look Inside

We observed 6 adults with psychogenic bilateral amblyopia. The cause of amblyopia was variable. It was presumably due to escape from reality (3 cases), fear about loss of eyesight (1), malingering (1) and unkown (1).

The prognosis was generally favorable after various therapeutic attempts, including prescrip-tion of glasses or contact lenses (2), administration of vitamin preparations (1), referral to psychiatric specialists (1) and persuasion stressing the absenceof ocular abnormalities (2).

While clinicians encounter considerable difficulty in differentiating between organic disease and psychogenic amblyopia including malingering, repeated and detailed ophthalmological examina-tion is essential in the diagnosis.

Our findings indicate that psychogenic amblyopia is not uncommon even in adults. This fact must be borne in mind even when amblyopia develops dur-ing the course of other eye disorders.
