A 26-year-old woman presented with severe ocular pain and lacrimation due apparently to soft contact lens. She manifested erosion in the central cornea and bulbar hyperemia. After conventional topical treatments proved futile in alleviating the pain and lacrimation the next day, the eye was treated by instillation of solution containing 4% aspirin DL-lysine. In less than 10 seconds, the eye pain drastically diminished and the patient could open her affected eye. After a total of 8 instillations during the next 2 hours, the ocular pain completelydisappeared with reduction in bulbar hyperemia.

Symptoms of ocular pain, photophobia and la-crimation in contact lens wearers are referred as acute corneal hypoxia or acute overwear syndrome. Topical administration of solution containing aspi-rin DL lysine proved useful in preventing disruption of blood-aqueous barrier after paracentesis or laser irradiation of the iris. A similar mechanism may underlie the observed effect of the preparation in the current case.
