  • Look Inside

We evaluated the clinical efficacy of topically applied fibronectin in 302 cases with corneal epithe-lial lesions. Fibronectin for ophthalmic use was prepared by processing the plasma of the patientsby affinity chromatography and gel filtration tech-nique. Patients were instructed to instill the eye-drops 6 times daily.

All the 302 cases in the present series manifested, prior to treatment, epithelial keratopathy due to herpes simplex 102 cases, intraocular surgery 53 cases, thermal or chemical burns 16 cases etc.

As an overall assessment, the treatment was effective in 207 cases (68.5%). The finding indicates that topical fibronectin treatment is indicated forpersistent corneal epithelial defects associated with herpetic keratitis, neurotrophic ulcer and eye sur-geries including cataract extraction and kerato-plasty.
