  • Look Inside

We reviewed eye patients seen in the emergency department of our hospital during the past 10 years (1976-1986). Out of a total of 54. 136 emergency cases, patients with eye problems numbered 1,707, or 3.1 %. Out of these 1,707 cases, 136 cases (8%) needed treatment as in-patients. There was a pre-ponderance of males over females at the ratio of 2 to 1. Eighty percent of the cases were under 40 yearsof age. Ocular trauma was involved in 70% of the cases including foreign body, contusion, laceration and corneal abrasion due to contact lens wear.

The findings indicate that there in a certain ten-dency in the distribution of age, sex and diagnosis. This information would serve as a guide in the selection of essential eye-care equipments in the emergency room and in educating general emer-gency doctors in the initial ophthalmic manage-ment.
