  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We examined 42 cases, 65 eyes, with optic nervediseases by means of short latency visual evokedpotential (SVEP) studies. The series included 24cases with optic atrophy (39 eyes), 13 optic neuritis(16 eyes) and 9 optic nerve injury (10 eyes). In 95%of 65 eyes in the series, we observed disappearanceof early components (N26, N32, N40) of SVEPwhich are known to reflect visual pathway poten-tials.

This incidence was almost the same as that ofpattern VEP abnormality in cases of optic neuritisdue to multiple sclerosis. SVEP was thus useful inthe detection of optic nerve disorders, particularlyin cases with low visual acuity, central scotoma, unstable fixation, or opacity of the media in whompattern VEP cannot be applied.
