  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated a consecutive series of 10,206 cases who sought primary ophthalmological care at the Saiseikai Hospital, Sakai City, Osaka, overe a 3-year period (1981-83).

Males accounted for 70% of the whole series. Therewere two age-related peaks at the first and fourth decades. In spite of the sense of urgency in the patients, less than one-half of the cases were judged as in need of prompt professional care.

No definite tendency was present as to the laterality of the affected eye in cases with corneal or conjunctival foreign bodies. In cases with perforating ocular injuries and laceration of the eyelid or conjunctiva, on the other hand, the left eye tended to be involved more frequently than the right. It was assumed, as the probable cause of this laterality, that the left eye is less capable of avoid-ing action in the event of fast approaching injurious object.
