We evaluated the incidence and drug sensitivity of microorganisms isolated from eye infections in 1,448 patients in our department over a 5 year period (1980-84). Out of a total of 2,009 strains of microorganisms isolated, 1,120 (55.7 %) were Gram-positive cocci and 389 (19.4 %) were Gram-negative rods. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most frequent with 709 strains or 63.3 % of gram-positive cocci. Among Gram-negative rods, glucose non-fermentative ones were most fre-quently isolated (52.7%), followed by Haemophilus influenzae (16.2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11.1%) and others. Anaerobic bacteria were also frequent (18. 5%).

The drug sensitivity of microorganisms were mea-sured by the disc method. Strains of Staphylococcus aureus showed high resistance to penicillin G through-out each year of the period. Strains resistant to cloxacil-lin appeared from 1983 on. There was a gradual rise in the frequency of strains of Staphylococcus epidermidisresistant to cloxacillin. Strains of Pseudomonas aer-uginosa showed very high resistance to ABPC and cephalosporins as well as occasional resistance to gentamicin and colistin. Doxycycline-resistant strains of glucose non-fermentative Gram-negative rods appeared in 1984. Gentamicin-resistant strains were on gradual increase during the period.
