  • Look Inside

We observed a case of unilateral aplasia of the optic nerve in an otherwise normal and healthy female baby. She was delivered uneventfully at 38 weeks' gestation and weighed 2, 178 grams. At birth, the child was normal in every respect except the smallness of the right eye. Funduscopy revealed a complete absence of the optic disc and retinal vessels. A slight posterior staphyloma was present. Infero-temporal to the staphyloma, a coloboma of 1 disc diameter was present. Fluorescein angiography show-ed absence of retinal vasculature. ERG gave a reduced but reproducible A and B wave responses. VEP showed no response. Computed tomography showed no optic nerve of the right eye. The left eye was judged clinically normal. The present case appears to be the thirty-third reported in litera-ture.
