We conducted a collaborated survey on ocular infections due to chlamydia trachomatis in Sapporo during a 6-month period through April 1985. Chla-mydia trachomatis was isolated in 3 out of 78 cases (4%) from the cervix of pregnant females attending the prenatal clinic. Chlamydia trachomatis was also isolated in 8 out of 30 cases (27%) with acute con-junctivitis in newborn babies. Chlamydia tracho-matis was isolated in 3 out of 5 cases (60%) with unilateral acute conjunctivitis in adults, suggesting the possibility of sexually transmitted disease. IgG antibody against chlamydia trachomatis was found in 14 out of 34 cases (41%) with cicatricial or IV stage of trachoma through enzyme-linked immu-nosorbent assay (ELISA). These findings point to the importance of chlamydia trachomatis in a variety of conjunctivitis.
