  • Look Inside

We carried out a survey of severe visual dis-turbances in Aichi-ken (population : 6 million) using questionnaires. Evaluated were 424 children born during 1966-1981.

During the period of survey, about 30 children with severe visual disturbances were born annually in Aichi-ken. This incidence was distinctly smaller in 1976 and 1977. Severe visual disturbances were more frequent in boys than in girls. In abut 60% of the series, visual disturbances resulted from congenital or hereditary diseases. More than 95% of causative lesions involved the retinochoroidal system, the lens, optic nerve, brain, and the eye as a composite whole.
