We quantitated the chemical constituents in surgically removed lenses due to senile cataract and compared the findings with the clinical type of cataracts. Measurements were made on sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc concentrations. The amount of lens protein was determined by SDS gradient (PAGE) method.
Nuclear cataracts showed normal values for each item. Cortical cataracts, on the other hand, showed significantly raised Na+ and lowered K+ concentra-tion. The Na+/K+ ratio was reversed when com-pared with the normal values.
