Changes in intraocular pressure and blood osmolality following administration of water, hypertonic saline, and hypertonic urea have been studied.

After consuming 1,000cc of water, patients with open angle glaucoma manifest an increase in intraocular pressure and a decrease in blood osmolality. The converse is true in the same patients after consumption of 500cc of hypertonic saline.

After administration of hypertonic urea (1g/kg. intavenously or 1.5g/kg. orally) to pa-tients with all types of glaucoma profound reductions in intraocular pressure resulted, con comitant with significant increase in blood osmolality.
